Got a fishing boat you've worked on or are still working on... Bought a new fishing boat and want to share your pride and joy with others? (or just brag!)

2weeks

Post by Islander » Sun Jan 13, 2008 8:57 am

Only 2 weeks?

Downunder back when I was a human resources manager - our staff effectively had about 29 weeks a year holiday/annum under the awards system if they manipulated the system effectively!

4 weeks annual leave
2 weeks pro rata Long Service Leave (13 weeks every 7 years)
2.6 weeks public & gazetted holidays
2 weeks sick leave
1 week compassionate leave
0.6 week Urgent Personal Business leave
2.4 weeks RDOs (38 hour week = 1 day / 4 weeks off)
0.6 weeks short leave
13.9 weeks of "weekend" days (Sat & Sun)

29.1 weeks out of 52 our staff weren't available for work!.

My old manager would budget 48 weeks work a year on the works program - assuming everyone took 4 weeks annual leave - then at the endof the year always bitch and moan about why we spent all the $ in the budget buit only ever got half theprogrammed work done with the dollars!

One day I pointed out to him that most days more than half our staff were never there and ran the above table past him!

His face went white.... he said I always wondered why it was so quiet round here with the 126 staff we have, i just figured everyone was out in th Forest working - i never realized half of them were away fishing!

After that we became "top performing district" every year instead of bottom performing district, because he wised up and only programmed about 6 months work for a whiole years budget once he worked out the union awards made it impossible to do any more than 6 months work, we always managed to comlete our works program from then on - and within budget!

Just a matter if knowing how much us Aussies REALLY work!

We ride on the back of the mineral resources boom - when it dies - most ofthe Aussie workforce will die along with it - because an honest days work would kill most of em.

Now we have State and Federal Labor partys running the country again - who are controlled by the unuions it will be straight back to the good ol days - of 5 months on 7 months off and we will again become known as land of the long weekend!

This is why unemployment will sky rocket - who in thei right mind would employ anyone at the labor rates we have when the only show up one day in tow if your lucky?

We are so screwed and no one realises it yet!
Time will prove me right again!

Cheers

VACATION IN THE USA

Post by Bob Fisher » Sun Jan 13, 2008 3:49 pm

You get three weeks AFTER five years... I was with the previous company for 6 years but I just started a new job 1 and a 1/2 years ago so now I'm back to two weeks again...

You also only get 5 days sick leave - if you use any more than that it comes out of your vacation and then after that it's unpaid time off....

I typically have to try and get everything done on the weekend:
house maintenance, boat maintenance, website maintenance and find time to go fishing sometimes... And the missus would like me to spend more time with her too...

no RDO's here!

We obviously also get public holidays... but not as many as Aus....
