I think that the tow vehicle broke down and now they are getting the boat home via tow truck... but then, I really don't know - especially here in the States!

You could be right Bob - that or the tow truck driver owns a boat and uses his work truck to tow it.

We'd see a lot more of that here I'd wager, guys using their work vehicle as a tow vehicle on weekends etc - sometimes just because it has a fuel card in the glove compartment and the boss is paying the fuel bill - here that's sometimes part of the work agreement - provision of work vehicle & fuel card with authorization to use it weekends / holidays etc.

It's a perk for the worker and tax write-off for the employer - cheaper than giving a pay rise.
