POSTCARDS FROM THE LEDGE

FISHING IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA with Ross Compe

Fishing Madora Bay, Mandurah

January is regarded as prime for the summer run of large Mulloway. This 43lb specimen was taken by Grant Mackay from a deep parallel gutter at Madora.

It took a fillet of fresh Sea Mullet in late afternoon.

Singleton,Golden Bay and San Remo are well known for Tailor and fish at there best when the beach formations have created gutters and close inshore channels.

The groynes at the Mandurah Heads is a great Herring spot and you can catch your own Whitebait at night with throw nets at the Yacht Clubs late in summer.

The Mulloway Run

Post by Ross Compe » Mon May 30, 2011 8:20 am

Grant wasn't the only one to find the big Mulloway during that incredible run of big Mulloway from the beaches.
A young Bob Fisher landed four huge Mulloway in an Offshore Angling Club Perth Beach Field Competition that had the experts scratching their heads.

Golden Bay

Post by Ross Compe » Thu Jun 16, 2011 3:32 am

Golden Bay is a fantastic beach angling location that has accounted for many fish over the years.
The 4wd tracks may have closed down north of the main swimming area but 2 feet and a hearbeat will lead you to some terrific angling opportunity.
Some very good holes and gutters are created during winter and depending on the beach formation quality table fare are often found here.
Big Mulloway taken by Peter Offer and other club anglers during the night have received a lot of publicity in the past.
Silver Bream and Yellowfin Whiting are the main targets for locals in early morning and afternoon and it is those species that make it a most desirable location.

Golden Bay Mulloway with Joe Horvath

Post by Ross Compe » Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:35 am

Aaand here they are... !! Guess what?
Joe has caught some more big bloody Mulloway
If you have been viewing regularly you will have noticed that he has caught so many big Mulloway from the beaches of Lancelin,Cervantes,Floreat Groyne,The Swan River,Kalbarri and everywhere else and now Golden Bay that despite being his very best friend I have become disturbed by how successful he is..
I know we are good friends but listening to Joes stories lately of big beach Mulloway encounters and uploading his photographs has totally blown me away..Mulloway wise that is.
After having been tortured by his great catches from everywhere else the last set of photographs are of his very nice croaker taken at the hole near the end of the track.
Its a very good beach location if fished right for both big and small fish.
Joe nabbed this ripper well after midnight.
Well Done
Sniff,sob,oh well...
You know what I am beginning to no longer feeling sorry for him losing his biggest Mulloway for the year competition.
He may have more bigger Mulloway than me but Joe just spends most of his time fishing while I am now desk bound and suffering.
Not that Joe will know because he is too busy fishing and doesnt look at our feeble contribution to angling and i'm not planning on telling him soon..
I did show him Sportfishworld and Postcards from the Ledge and he thought it was fantastic.
I'm thinking of letting his tyres down soon because he is such an unassuming angler that unless I tell and show everyone how clever here is we dont get a look.
He is a State Beach and Rock Open Angling Champion now and I am glad we fished and learnt from one another about hooks and rigs and knots and our craft and had so much fun.

New Herring Bag Limits

Post by Ross Compe » Thu Apr 09, 2015 10:26 am

New Herring bag limits have been imposed by Fisheries effective March 1 2015. :x :x
Concerns over declining numbers of Herring in Western Australian waters has seen quotas halved and anglers restricted to 12 fish per day.
Failure to comply may lead to your prosecution.
Herring frames are being collected by angling clubs and are being forwarded to Fisheries for scientific analysis for study on growth rates etc. :?: :?:
Cheers

Madora Bay Great White Shark Attack

Post by Ross Compe » Fri Jun 03, 2016 1:04 pm

Terrifying shark attack on a surfer this week at Madora Bay,Western Australia. A Great white shark is believed to be responsible for the early morning attack that saw the mans leg severed while remaining attached to his surfboards leg rope.
Another attack in the locality.
A Great white shark was later filmed only a few hundred meters away from the tragic attack after taking a bait on a drum and float line by fisheries officers the following day.
Heroic efforts by friends who entered the blood filled waters to retrieve the waterman after the attack and some very quick thinking and credited first aid at the scene has the survivor still alive and and fighting for his life after losing his leg.
Still here the conflict rages between tragedy, public safety and conservation.
God speed to his recovery and courage that has inspired the people of Perth.
God Bless...Together we pray ...

Myalup And Runner Up Winner

Post by Ross Compe » Thu Apr 13, 2017 11:01 am

Greg Uren continues to impress in competition and angling administrative levels.Gooood stuff from the new wave.
Greg has nabbed a fantastic Flathead of 720gms, a 4kg Salmon,9 Herring and yep 4 Bloomin Tailor when we thought they were all but over for this season north of the Myalup beaches.
Runner up in the open division for his esteemed club in the March beach and rock competition his choice for the Go Anywhere event proved both economical fuel wise and productive.
Great stuff that ordinary folk may still aspire to enjoy.

Lohan Nortse returned to Madora Bay in early May and repeated his success with a win in his clubs Go Anywhere event. Lohans bag included a Tailor and Salmon.
Well done :!: :!:
A couple of field day wins for a new club member in short succession is a terrific feat.
All the best for future wins.
Tight lines..
